Elnora Walden Payne, 90, of the 500 block of Nelson St., died May 30, 1996, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Payne was born in Sunny County, Va., and was a resident of Norfolk for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Stephen J. and Alice Holloway Walden and the widow of Lafayette Payne. She was the retired owner and operator of Riverside Beauty Salon. Mrs. Payne was a member of the New Central Baptist Church of Norfolk where she was the organizer of the Cordelia Lamb Altar Guild and served as president for a number of years. She was also a member of the Ruby B. Westbrook Missionary Society.
A great lover and cultivator of flowers, Mrs. Payne was a member of the Campostella Garden Club. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Mrs. Payne was predeceased by a daughter, Edith P. James of Wilson, N.C., and a sister, Elizabeth W. Brooks of Norfolk.
Survivors include two daughters, Elnora P. Green of Norfolk and Yvonne P. Davis of Virginia Beach; a sister, Salonia W. Wills of Norfolk; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several cousins; and many dear friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the New Central Baptist Church by the Rev. James A. Missick. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Department of Geriatric Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, 825 Fairfax Ave. 23507. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
