HALF A MILLION Whirlpool and Kenmore dishwashers are being recalled because wiring in the door latches may overheat and catch fire.
Owners of the affected models should not use the dishwashers until they can be serviced, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The dishwashers were sold nationwide between June 1991 and October 1992 for $350 to $475. About half were sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Affected Whirlpool brands have model numbers beginning with DU8, DP8, DU9 and GDP. Kenmore brands have model numbers that start with 665.
Both brands have serial numbers ranging from FA2400000 to FA5299999, or from FB0100000 through FB1899999.
The model and serial numbers are on a plate on the right front edge of the tub.
Owners of Whirlpool dishwashers should call 1-800-874-9481 to arrange for a service call or free repair. Those who bough either brand of dishwasher from Sears will be contacted by a company representative, who will schedule repairs at no cost. Sears customers also may call 1-800-927-1625.
