OUT AND ABOUT in the Virginia Beach sports scene:
Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money: The Virginia Beach Sports Club recently dispersed its annual scholarships to Beach high school seniors.
Each of the 11 students was honored at a luncheon and then presented with a check for $2,000. To qualify, each had to be in the top 10 percent of his or her graduating class academically and had to have lettered in at least one sport.
This year's winners were Michelle Epps of Tallwood, Quiana Erb of Green Run, Katie Etter of Cox, Shannon Perkins of Ocean Lakes, George Kannarkat of First Colonial, Beth Miller of Kempsville, Ginny McGraw of Cape Henry, Mayuri Lakdawala of Princess Anne, Debbie Comana of Salem, Shawn Rivera of Bayside and Matt Morgan of Kellam.
Also in the money are four Atlantic Travel Soccer club high school seniors who were recently awarded scholarship funds.
The four recipients were chosen from 16 applications from nine of the Beach District's 10 schools. Each received $300.
Kempsville's Anne Grochmal carried a 3.8 GPA and will attend the University of Virginia. Gordon Peters of Cox will also go to U.Va., and he carried a 4.0 GPA. He also scored a 1,350 on his SAT.
Kellam's Amanda Mickiewicz and Ed Stockunas were the other recipients. Mickiewicz will attend Virginia Wesleyan, while Stockunas plans to go to ODU.
More soccer: Several players from First Colonial High have been working as volunteers for youth soccer teams playing in the Great Neck and Kings Grant area.
The 23 players worked with a total of seven teams ranging in age from under-8 to U-14.
And even more soccer: The third annual North American Sand Soccer Championships hit the beach this weekend with competition for boys and girls U-10 through U-17/19, men U-30, over-30 and over-40, women open and over 40, coed recreation/corporate and coed parents teams. Registration is up considerably from the last couple of years, so the weekend should be a real kick.

Speaking of a real kick: Four-time International Sport Karate Association world champion Curtis Bush defends his super welterweight title Thursday night in Belfast, Ireland.
Bush, 39-8-2 with 28 knockouts, will face Tom Montgomery who is 42-8 with 30 KOs.
Win, lose or draw, Bush will then fight next month for a fifth world title when he takes on Francis Farley in San Jose, Calif. Farley is 28-0 and the current light middleweight champ.
After that fight, Bush will call it quits.
``I want to try for a fifth world belt and no matter what happens in that fight, that'll be it for me,'' said Bush. ``I want to concentrate on my school and family and hopefully I can go out with a fifth world title.
``I can't fight forever.''
Smart guy: Virginia Beach resident Shane Shapiro has been awarded Ivy league All-Academic honors.
The Brown University senior led the Brown Bears baseball team with a team-leading ERA and most saves.
Banana Open: The 17th annual Banana Open Tennis Tournament begins next week with singles play June 13-16 at Owls Creek Municipal Tennis Center.
Men's, women's and mixed doubles competition will be held next month - July 17-21.
Winners advance to another tournament at Hilton Head.
Registration deadlines are June 8 for singles and July 12 for doubles.
