RECENT OUTDOOR art shows produced a host of local and regional winners. A partial list follows:
Art Explosure (formerly the Ghent Art Show), was held May 11 and 12 at Town Point Park in Norfolk.
Best in show: Vonnie Whitworth, a Virginia Beach watercolorist. Award of excellence: glassblowers Jim and Mary Karg of Douglasville, Ga. Award of distinction: Norfolk jewelers Fred and Barbara Mason. A.B. Jackson Award: Cynthia Rector Jones, a Norfolk painter.
The Patricia J. Sawyer Memorial Award: Sharon Franklin. Awards of honor: Thom Kittredge and Yvonne Hegney, and Ken Wright. Awards of merit: Karen and Jim Hill, and Will Connor.
Judges: Dr. Jacqueline F. Bontemps, associate professor of art, Hampton University; and nationally acclaimed artists Anne Durand (glass beads) and Nancy Thomas (folk); $4,700 in prize money was given.
The 12th annual Stockley Gardens Spring Arts Festival took place May 18 and 19 at Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood.
Best in show: woodturner Bill Johnston of West End, N.C. Second place: Jeweler Wendy Newman of Newport News. Third place: Barbara Buckingham of Staunton. Norfolk Artist Award and the Best Booth Award: Norfolk sculptor Elizabeth Reid.
Awards of merit: Candace Young, Rick Alma, Marty Celum, Fiona Clark and Vincent DeLisle, and Lewis Pate.
Judge: Michael Lash, curator of public art, city of Chicago; $4,125 in prize money was given.
The AFR'AM Fest art show was held May 25 to 27 at Town Point Park.
Best in show: Larry Denson, an oil painter from Baltimore. Second place: Newport News artist George Gary. Awards of merit: Jerome White of Norfolk and Ted Liles of Lebanon, Pa.
Judges: Dr. Jacqueline F. Bontemps, Hampton University, and Chinedu Okala, associate professor of art, Norfolk State University; $1,550 in prize money was given.
The 26th annual Seawall Art Show was held May 25 and 26 on the downtown Portsmouth waterfront.
First place: Seaford painter James Warwick Jones. Second place: Donna Dellaganna of Earlysville. Third place: James Richmond of Titusville, Fla. Fourth place: Portsmouth ceramicist Howard Johnson.
Honorable mentions: Ed Cope, Wendy Newman, Robert Carter, Raymond Bell and Edgar Reims. Awards of merit: Michele Messick, Wayne Potrafka, Willie Williams Jr., Stuart Saul and Paul Brennan.
Judge: Larry Stene, professor of art, Washington and Lee University, Lexington; $4,800 in awards was given.
