Jean Cyphers Childress, of the 7700 block of Leafwood Drive, died June 10, 1996, at home after a courageous fight against cancer.
Jean was born in Gary, W.Va., on July 7, 1927, and lived in West Virginia until she finished college. She attended Mary Washington College, where she received a B.A. degree in chemistry. Later she became a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and worked as a medical technologist for five years. She worked with the Norfolk City School System for 29 years as a science teacher and as a librarian.
She was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church and served as a pianist for all Sunday school classes for 10 years.
Jean is survived by her husband, Michael L. Childress; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie C. and Leonard Touchette and Sherry C. and Thomas Uribe; five grandchildren, George T. Bowden IV, David, Leigh Anne, Lindsay and Steven Touchette.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Bob DeWitt and Dr. Walker Stockburger. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Hospice Volunteers or Lee's Friends of Norfolk.
