SMALL FISH EQUAL BIG CATCHES FOR FISHERMEN ALONG THE OUTER BANKS

Pier fishing along the Dare Coast was fairly good this past weekend. Mainly small bottom fish were taken, with the best action reported on the incoming tide during the early afternoon.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed plenty of small spot, croaker and little gray trout Saturday afternoon. Fair numbers of spot, small sea mullet and gray trout were taken Sunday.

Avalon Pier reported small gray trout, spot and croaker landed during the weekend. A few small blues were landed Sunday morning.

Small trout, spot, sea mullet and croaker were caught from Nags Head Pier Saturday and Sunday.

Fishermen on Jennette's Pier landed a few small bottom fish during the weekend.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught gray trout, bluefish and bottom fish Saturday. Lots of spot, scattered sea mullet and croaker were taken Sunday.

Sea mullet, small gray trout, bluefish and spot were landed from piers along the northern beaches Monday.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught small bottom fish Saturday. Tailor blues were landed just before dark. Plenty of mixed-sized spot and a few sea mullet were taken Sunday.

Good numbers of spot were landed Saturday and Sunday on Avon Pier. Lots of black tip sharks were taken before the low tide arrived Saturday.

Frisco Pier reported slow fishing during the weekend. A handful of Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken Saturday, and a couple of king mackerel and cobia were lost. Sea grass was thick Sunday, and only a few small bottom fish were taken.

Scattered small bottom fish were landed from piers on Hatteras Island Monday.

Surf fishing from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was fairly slow during the weekend. Anglers landed a few spot, croaker and sea mullet on the rising tide. A few keeper flounder and trout were reported from Oregon Inlet's south side.

A few bottom fish were landed by surfcasters along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A 4-pound flounder was hauled from the Avon surf Friday.

A few puppy drum were beached Saturday morning at Cape Point. Scattered small flounder and small bluefish were taken along the beach south of Cape Point during the day. A few Spanish mackerel, small blues and little flounder were landed along the south beach Sunday.

Scattered small blues and flounder were caught by surfcasters from Ramp 55 to False Point throughout the weekend. A few Spanish mackerel were landed from the Hatteras Inlet surf Sunday morning.

A few small Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed by half-day charters trolling around Oregon Inlet. Good catches of red drum were taken in the ocean outside Oregon Inlet Friday.

Headboats around the inlet landed small croaker and gray trout Saturday. Small bottom fish, flounder and some nice sea mullet were caught in the area Sunday.

Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet Saturday. Charters reported plenty of gaffer dolphin taken, along with scattered tuna. The best action was between the 40330 and the 40630 Loran lines.

The Hog Wild released a blue marlin and a white marlin. A white marlin was released by the Gannet.

Blue water action was good again Sunday, with several limits of dolphin, scattered king mackerel, tuna and a few wahoo landed. The Pelican reported eight wahoo taken. Three white marlin were released by the Suspense, and a white marlin was released by the CJ-IV.

Hatteras charters landed fair numbers of dolphin, scattered tuna and a few wahoo Saturday. Blue marlin were released by the Hatteras Fever and the Brothers Pride. Two white marlin were released by the Citation and oneby Walt Spruill's Hatteras Fever.

Although rough seas made fishing difficult off Hatteras Sunday, good dolphin catches were reported, including a 53-pounder by the Marlin Mania. A few tuna also were taken, and three white marlin were released by the Hatteras Fever.

The water temperature was 60 degrees Monday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 77 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.

The results of the first day of The Big Rock Marlin Tournament in Morehead City are as follows: 54 boats fished, 126 boats took a layday. Four fish were released, including three white marlin and one sailfish. No blue marlin were reported. The tournament continues through the rest of the week. by CNB
