City officials have begun searching for a new fire chief to replace Tedd Melvin, who resigned May 31 after five years on the job.
``He's leaving because of a disability,'' City Manager Steven Harrell said Monday. ``He has applied through the state Medical Review Board for disability retirement and is awaiting word on that.''
Harrell would not elaborate on Melvin's disability. Melvin, who has moved to Low Gap, just south of the Virginia border, could not be reached.
Melvin started work in Elizabeth City in September 1991 after 22 years of experience in firefighting and administration in such cities as Greensboro, Salisbury, Kinston and Lumberton. His hiring was approved by a 4-3 vote of the City Council.
Harrell did not have details on how or when a new chief will be chosen.
``Quite frankly, I'm still formulating how I want to do that,'' he said. by CNB
