INDONESIAN YOUTHS HELP TO CREATE NEW EXHIBIT AT CHILDREN'S MUSEUM

Some of Indonesia's most talented children helped create an intriguing new exhibit at the Children's Museum of Virginia.

The museum held a black tie and tennis shoe gala to promote the new exhibit and to raise money for the second phase of the Children's Museum, which is expected to cost more than $3 million to complete.

The art surprised most of the adults who came to the party. The watercolors, pen and ink drawings, and oil paintings were impressive examples of folk art. Children from 4 to 17 created the works, which looked finished and professional.

The adults were awed by the artwork while munching on Indonesian treats. Party-goers also were treated to entertainment from a group of Indonesian dancers who performed four traditional dances. Representatives from the Indonesian Embassy in Washington also attended the festivities.

The art exhibit, ``The Giant Who Swallowed the Moon,'' will be on display through Sept. 2 at 221 High St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by BETH BERGMAN
