The Portsmouth City Amateur, one of the nation's longest continuous golf tournaments, is moving dates again.
The tournament had been scheduled for June 22-23 at Sleepy Hole but officials have decided to shift to the fall. No new date has been set.
Now sponsored by Commerce Bank, the tournament has been played every year since 1926 except 1943 and 1955.
In recent years, it has bounced back and forth from summer to fall. Last year, it was held in June and drew fewer than 50 players. Because of numerous tournaments during this same time, another small field had been anticipated if the event were held in June.
There are nine area tournaments this month, in addition to qualifying for the State Amateur and State Open. Sleepy Hole hosted the Spivey Rental ODU Scholarship Tournament last weekend. The Norfolk City Amateur is June 29-30 at Ocean View.
Elizabeth Manor is holding its annual Member-Guest Tournament today and Saturday. The Cedar Point Member-Guest Tournament is June 21-22.
A 72-hole tournament through most of its years, the City Amateur has been 36 holes the past three years since it was shifted from Bide-A-Wee to Sleepy Hole.
Billy Judah won last year with rounds of 70 and 69. The 139 was a tournament record for 36 holes. by CNB
