Charges are pending against the 20-year-old driver of a car that crashed Wednesday night, killing a passenger.
Donald Joseph McKinney, who is stationed aboard the carrier America, was driving a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro south in the 200 block of West Road about 9:20 p.m. when the car ran off the road, according to Elizabeth Jones, a spokeswoman for Chesapeake Police. The car flipped several times before coming to rest upside down in a field. Both the driver and passenger were thrown from the car.
Jason A. Paige, 21, also stationed aboard the America, was dead when police arrived. McKinney is in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, listed in stable condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Alcohol, excessive speed and the failure to wear seat belts all played a role in the accident, Jones said.
