ONLY TWO JUNIORS were able to break into the senior-laden All-Southeastern District boys soccer team, selected by the coaches of the seven participating schools in the conference.
Norcom did not field a team.
The 12-player squad includes three holdovers from last year and five players from the second team.
The repeaters are keeper Nick Shockley and midfielder Sean Gomez of Deep Creek and Churchland sweeper David Tynch.
Moving up from the second unit are Churchland's William Moore and Robert Davis, Great Bridge's John Hatfield, Indian River's Sophan Phith and Western Branch's Steve Collett.
The first unit includes five players from district champion Deep Creek. The Hornets won both the regular season and the district tournament, finishing with an 11-4 record and claiming their first conference crown since 1980. Deep Creek then knocked off defending champion Lafayette in the Eastern Regionals before bowing to Kellam in the semifinal round.
In addition to Shockley and Gomez, the Hornets placed Marlo Magalang, Steve Verdi and Joe Verdi. The keeper work by Shockley was instrumental in Deep Creek having a 57-17 edge over opponents in goals scored.
Churchland grabbed three all-league spots with an 8-6-1 record and a runner-up finish in the Southeastern District tournament.
The other first-team selection is Justin Parker, a junior defender from Great Bridge. The only other non-senior is Collett.
Joe Verdi paced the district in scoring with 14 goals. An all-district kicker in football, the Hornet forward also had eight assists.
Chosen for the third straight year, Churchland's Tynch, who also was the kicker for the Truckers' football team, was the second leading scorer in the district with 10 goals. He had four assists.
Magalang racked up nine goals and notched four assists for the Hornets.
The next leading scorer was Churchland's Davis with six goals. One of the district's premier golfers, Davis chipped in three assists.
Both Churchland's Moore and Great Bridge's Hatfield scored three goals and had three assists. Gomez also had three assists, scoring one goal.
The second team has 13 players, topped by five from Deep Creek. Great Bridge placed three, Churchland and Western Branch each had two and Wilson landed one.
There are eight seniors, two juniors and three sophomores.
This unit includes Western Branch's Daniel Dussia, a first-team utility player last year, and one holdover - Western Branch midfielder Kenny Sloane. It was Sloane's third year on the No. 2 unit. ILLUSTRATION: ALL-SOUTHEASTERN DISTRICT BOYS SOCCER
