The bodies of a man and a woman were found at different times Saturday in the same block of Ocean View, but police said their slayings are not related.
Both bodies were found in the 9500 block of 29th Bay Street - one in an apartment, the other outdoors - and both deaths were called homicides by police.
``They are not linked,'' said Maravia Ebong, a police spokeswoman. ``It's just a coincidence.''
That didn't settle the nerves of area residents, however. Some had heard rumors earlier that one person was responsible for both deaths. Being told that there were now apparently two killers wasn't any more comforting.
``I'm not sure whether I should feel better or worse,'' said an area resident, who spoke on condition her name not be used. ``Is it better there's two murderers running around here instead of one?''
Ebong said Imanu Phillips, 21, who is believed to have lived in the area, was found lying on the ground between 1 and 2 a.m. He had been shot in the head and died about 5 a.m. at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Later Saturday, about 3 p.m., the body of Montrose Woodhouse, 44, was found in her apartment.
Neighbors said the woman's daughter had come to the apartment to check on her but got no answer when she knocked on the door.
An apartment manager let her in, and that's when the body was discovered.
Police ruled the death a homicide, although they did not offer any details on how the victim may have died. The body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office.
There are no suspects or motives in either case, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Line at 664-4040. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
