HERRINGTON LIMPS INTO U.S. TRIALS A STRESS FRACTURE THREATENS TO DERAIL 1,500-METER BID.

A stress fracture in his left foot has put Terrance Herrington's bid to make his second Olympic team in jeopardy.

Herrington, a '92 Olympian in the 1,500 meters who trains about six months each year in Chesapeake, suffered the injury last month at a meet in Eugene, Ore.

Since then, Herrington's training has been confined to a swimming pool and stationary bike, but he said he planned a test run on grass upon his arrival in Atlanta on Saturday.

The first round of the 1,500 meters begins Monday night at 6:55, with the semifinals Thursday and the final next Sunday. The top three finishers make the Olympic team.

``I'm just trying to get to the starting line,'' said Herrington, who ran at Clemson University for Wade Williams, now the track coach at Western Branch High School. Herrington lives and trains with Williams when he's not in his hometown of Hartsville, S.C., or competing on the European circuit.

Herrington, a regular on the U.S. national team, was third in the '92 Olympic trials. In the Barcelona Games, he failed to make the final.

Before the Eugene meet, Herrington said, his foot hurt a little but he ran anyway. It still hurt after a run two days later, and a bone scan revealed a stress fracture of his third metatarsal.

``It might take four, five, six weeks to heal. It's only been 3 1/2, so it's bad timing,'' Herrington said.
