Old Dominion won more than 64 percent of its athletic contests in the 1995-96 school year to win the 18th annual Virginia Sports Information Directors Association all sports survey.
The survey of Division I schools was started for the 1978-79 season, and Old Dominion now has won seven of the first eight overall titles and two of the last three.
Hampton won the Collegiate Minority Golf national title and finished third in the overall survey. This was Hampton's first year in Division I athletics.
George Mason won the state's sole team national championship in men's indoor track and field.
The 12 state Division I schools garnered 27 conference championships. JMU and VCU led with four titles each.
Virginia Division I schools collectively compiled a 1,799-1,603-30 record for a .529 winning percentage. Men's teams racked up a 973-808-18 mark (.546) while women's teams finished 826-795-12 (.509). ILLUSTRATION: VP Graphic
