James H. Fraser passed away on Friday, June 14, 1996, after years of declining health.
He was born Sept. 5, 1913 in Crewe, Va., to Simon and Gladys Fraser. The second of four boys, he grew up and lived most of his life in Norfolk. He attended JEB Stuart Elementary, Blair Junior and graduated from Maury High School. Following his graduation, he attended Washington and Lee where he majored in business and pre-law.
After college, he worked during the depression as an agent for what would become Alcohol Enforcement Division, but he left it to enlist as a warrant officer in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Caribbean during World War II.
Following the war, he returned to enter the shipping business, where he remained until 1988. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 327, where he became commander, and he was a member of the Kiwanis.
He became a widower in 1982 when his wife, Margaret Ashby Fraser, died.
He is survived by a brother, Douglas of Ohio; a son, Chip Fraser of California; two grandchildren, Christopher Aaron Fraser of Estonia and Phillip Byron Fraser; and a stepdaughter, Sandra Allen Kittle and her four children. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements.
