WILLIAM G. DRAKE

William Gould Drake, 8, died Monday, June 17, 1996, in Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Norfolk, following injuries sustained in a farming accident Saturday evening.

He was a native of Southampton County and was the son of Michael Gould and Rebecca White Drake. He recently completed second-grade at Boykins Elementary School where he was an honor student. He was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church and he participated in Southampton County Basketball League, the Newsoms coach-pitch baseball team and the 4-H Cloverbuds. He was a member of the fellowship of Christian Auto Racers. Most of all, he loved farming with his family at Sandy Ridge Farms Inc. in Newsoms.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Wendy Leigh Drake, age 10; a brother, Westley Barnes Drake, age 5; paternal grandparents, Claude Drake Jr. and Alma Lee Drake of Newsoms; maternal grandparents, Miles J. White Jr. and Jessie Leigh White of Franklin; paternal great-grandmother, Lillie Mae B. Drake of Newsoms; maternal great-grandmother, Carrie Leigh Askew of Ahoskie, N.C.; two uncles, Claude Dennis Drake and wife, Patty, of Newsoms, and Miles J. White III and wife, Susan, of Sedley; an aunt, Cindy Drake Richmond and husband, Joe, of Newsoms; and five cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday in Newsoms Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Williams and the Rev. Derik Koolman. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, and at other times at the residence, 31251 Sand Road, Newsoms. Memorial donations may be made to the William G. Drake Memorial Fund, c/o Boykins Elementary School, 17267 Pittman Road, Boykins, Va. 23827 or to the Boykins Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.
