Six crewmen of a sinking tug boat off the northeast coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, were rescued Monday by the crew of the Portsmouth-based Coast Guard cutter Bear.
A lookout on the Bear spotted distress flares fired from the tug Miss Kim about 6:45 a.m., according to officials.
The tug had been towing a barge when it began taking on water in its engine room. The crew managed to abandon the tug and move to the barge.
Another tug arrived to take control of the barge while the Bear returned the crew to San Juan.
The 270-foot Bear has been on routine patrol in the Caribbean.
