WEEKLY BRIEFING

BEST F-14 SQUADRON: Oceana-based Fighter Squadron 102 has won the prestigious ``Battle E'' award, naming the Diamondbacks the best Atlantic Fleet F-14 squadron for 1995. VF-102 went on to win the Clifton Award for 1995, naming it the best F-14 squadron in the Navy. The awards are presented annually to the squadron of each aircraft type that excels in operations, maintenance, safety, administration and combat readiness.

SUMMER FAIR AT FORT EUSTIS: The Army Transportation Center will hold an open house Friday to kick off ``Super Summer Fair '96.'' This is the second annual summer fair for Fort Eustis. It features the Strates Shows Carnival, America's only remaining railroad carnival. The fair will be held daily from June 21 through June 29. For more information, call (804) 878-4430.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

The Navy's newest oiler, Laramie, arrived in Norfolk June 13. Constructed at Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, Laramie is operated by Military Sealift Command with a civilian crew of 74 and a military detachment of 23 Navy personnel.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Vice Adm. George W. Emery will be relieved by Vice Adm. Richard W. Mies as Commander, Submarine Forces Atlantic during ceremonies at 11 a.m. Friday on the ballistic missile submarine Nebraska at Pier 12 of the Norfolk Naval Station. Emery will retire in the New England area. Mies previously served as Commander, Submarine Group Eight, and Commander, Submarines Mediterranean.

Cmdr. Malcolm Tignor Jr. relieves Cmdr. George Platz as commanding officer of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 56. Tignor has been executive officer of the squadron since June 1995.

Cmdr. Matthew Culbertson relieves Capt. Kurt Huff as the officer-in-charge of the military detachment onboard the Military Sealift Command ship Saturn. Culbertson most recently served on the staff of the Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Huff's next assignment is commanding officer, Naval Regional Contracting Center, Naples, Italy.

Capt. Ronald Verostek relieves Capt. Richard Costello as commanding officer of the Naval Transportation Support Center. Verostek's most recent assignment was the Naval Doctrine Command, where he was logistics officer. Costello will report for duty on the staff of Commander Second Fleet.

Lt. Col. Michael Pyatt relieves Lt. Col. Robert McCormick as commanding officer of the Armed Forces School of Music, Army Element. Pyatt most recently served as director of the soldiers chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington. McCormick will assume duties as director of the same group. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
