FREDERICK C. STEWART

Frederick Crisman Stewart, 86, of the 1300 block of Clay St., died Wednesday June 19, 1996, at his home.

Mr. Stewart, an attorney and the founding partner of the law firm of Stewart and Stewart, was a native of Norfolk and the oldest of nine children. He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia Law School.

He served as a patrol craft commander in the Pacific theater in World War II and retired with the rank of lieutenant. Mr. Stewart was a former clarinetist with the Norfolk Symphony, and his interest in music was lifelong. He was instrumental in the formation of the Franklin High School band program.

He was a founding director of the Bank of Franklin, a former president of the Franklin-Southampton County Bar Association, and a former chairman of the Tri-County Mental Health Board.

He was the widower of Virginia Brittingham Stewart and father of the late Richard Lawrence Stewart.

He is survived by a son, F. Bruce Stewart of Williamsburg; three sisters, Elizabeth S. Hill of Norfolk, June S. McGehee of Birmingham, Mich., Ann S. Corner of Virginia Beach; a brother, John N. Stewart of Norfolk; and three grandchildren, Emily C. Stewart, Peter H. Stewart and Marion B. Stewart.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, by the Rev. Edmond Pickup Jr. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Artists Fund, Paul D. Camp Community College, Franklin. Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
