Mabel Guthrie Wetherington, 87, of the 800 block of Henry Ave., died June 22, 1996, in her residence.
She was a native of Wildwood, N.C., and was the widow of Luke Herbert Wetherington. She was a retired owner and operator of a day-care school. She was a member of Soundview Free Will Baptist Church, Carter County, N.C., and the Gideons Auxiliary.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Alice Banks of Hampton, Janice Carol Moses of Chesapeake, Agnes Elaine Sandine of Riverton, Wyo., and Lois Kay LeRiche and Joyce Faye Christie, both of Gulfport, Miss.; a son, Ralph Lehman Wetherington of Chesapeake; three sisters, Louise Gaskins, Lillian Swindell and Doris Guthrie, all of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. by Dr. Roscoe Musselwhite and Mr. Leon Koontz in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gideons International.
