Claude Milton Mapp Jr., 79, a resident of Onancock, Va., died at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore on June 26, 1996.
Born and raised at ``White Hall'' in Machipongo, Va., he was the son of the late Claude Milton Mapp Sr. and the late Margaret Wilkins Mapp, and the devoted husband of the late Ruby Green Mapp, formerly of Park Ridge, Ill. He attended Machipongo Elementary School and Eastville High School. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, earning a bachelor of science in agricultural education. In 1977, he retired as county supervisor of the Farmer's Home Administration.
A veteran of World War II, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served as port director of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and later, Port Everglades, Fla. After the signing of the Japanese surrender, his final assignment was that of port director, Toyko. He was a lifelong member of Hungars Episcopal Church and a past member of several local civic and social organizations.
He is survived by a son, Robert Harmanson Mapp of Williamsburg; two sisters, Cora Mapp Chandler of Onancock, Va., and Marguerite Mapp Knee of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers-in-law, William H. Chandler of Onancock, Dan A. Knee of Charlotte and Oliver H. Green of Park Ridge, Ill.; and three nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Hungars Episcopal Church in Bridgetown, Va. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. John Rogers Mapp, Baxley T. Tankard, John R. Tankard and J. Linwood Walker. Contributions may be made to Hungars Church c/o Mrs. Frank M. McCraw, treasurer, Hungars Church, P.O. Box 208, Franktown, Va. 23354. Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home, Onancock, Va.
