GOLF OUTING TO BENEFIT UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY

The third annual United Cerebral Palsy Golf Tournament tees off July 9 at noon at the Greenbrier Country Club.

The charity event benefits United Cerebral Palsy of Southeast Virginia in its efforts to provide services to local children and adults with developmental disabilities. The charity is based in Virginia Beach.

Registration for the event is $100, which includes green fees, cart rental and dinner.

Door prizes are available, and the first three teams will receive gift certificates to the pro shop at the Greenbrier course.

According to Kathy A. Prendergast, the executive director of the center, the event should raise at least $8,000 toward center services like the program providing a weekend getaway for parents of disabled children.

A stipend is provided as part of the program so children are cared for.

Prendergast said proceeds would also go toward the Kids on the Block Program, which funds educational puppet shows that teach children about life with a disability.

``This is a fun way for us to raise money,'' said Stan Smith, chairman of this year's event. Smith, a lawyer with Faggert & Frieden in Chesapeake, was on the planning committee for last year's tournament. He also played in it.

``United Cerebral Palsy of Southeast Virginia is the only nationally affiliated chapter in the area,'' he said. ``But the money we raise doesn't go outside the area. It stays in Tidewater.

``It will stay in the community,'' he continued, ``and do good work for people who need some help.''

Two Chesapeake businesses, sister companies Area Container and Incendere Inc., are among the corporate sponsors for the event.

This is the first year the tournament has used corporate sponsors to underwrite costs, according to Prendergast. For their $1,000 donation, sponsors get a team of four players in the tourney.

The tournament is being played according to Florida best ball rules, with four players to a team.
