RADFORD'S JEFF WOODS TO COACH AT OLYMPICS

Portsmouth's Jeff Woods will be coaching in the Summer Olympic Games next month.

Woods, who coaches women's field hockey at Radford University, is an assistant coach of the United State's men's field hockey team.

He is one of four coaches on the U.S. team's staff. In addition to coaching on the field, his responsibilities include videotape analysis of preliminary competition and serving as team intermediary with the technical table during international matches.

A Churchland High School graduate who played baseball, Woods became a field hockey enthusiast as an exchange student in England in 1984. He is an '84 graduate of James Madison University.

Woods has been a coach at Radford since 1986, also coaching volleyball and softball. This was his 10th year as women's field hockey coach. Woods, who earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Virginia Tech in 1987, also serves as the equipment manager at Radford and assistant athletics coordinator.

Woods has been involved with the men's national field hockey team since 1985. He competed in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Houston in 1986. Earlier, he played for the Birkbeck College team in London.

He coached medal-winning teams in the 1989, 1990, 1993 and 1995 Sports Festivals. He was an assistant coach of the U.S. men's team at the World University Games in 1991.

``I've watched our team progress over the past several years,'' Woods said. ``We have a legitimate chance to compete with the world powers at the Olympic Games.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
