If you drink and drive or get too heavy-footed, you might receive a holiday greeting you don't want.
Police were out in force Thursday on area roads and highways, where radar guns were the weapon of choice against speeders. Anyone traveling this weekend is urged to be especially careful about obeying speed limits and wearing seat belts.
During last year's holiday weekend, 10 people died in Virginia in traffic accidents, state police said, and troopers arrested 172 drivers for drunken driving and wrote 5,021 speeding tickets.
In the past decade, 139 people have been killed in accidents during the holiday period in Virginia.
