LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - PORTSMOUTH

Where did money go for fees and fund-raisers?

In response to Kim Fowler's letter to the editor in the June 30 Currents, I also have children who play at Olive Branch Little League, and I would also like an accounting of where the money collected from registration fees, fund-raisers (the barbecue dinner on opening day) and the concession stand is allocated. What I would really like to see is an accounting from the concession stand, but this is impossible.

The concession stand is utilizing a cash drawer, not a cash register. How can anyone possibly know what is coming in? . . . Where is all the money going?

As for the renovations made to the major league boys field, it is my understanding that the sod was donated. Therefore, the cost to renovate this field for the state tournament would have been greatly reduced.

All in all, Olive Branch Little League can be successful in every way, if only those in charge would remember that this is ``little league'' and that our focus should be on the children and not on some ``adults' '' overblown egos.

June 30, 1996 Don't stop with courts, alter street corners, too

How selfish of the Port Norfolk Civic League to come upon the secret to curbing drug use and the concomitant vandalism and keeping it to themselves. What a stroke of genius, removing a basketball court! I was unaware that Nancy Reagan had moved into my neighborhood!

Damn the health benefits, the theater for biracial camaraderie or the training ground for a major sport. . . ! Certainly, an asphalt slab where the neighborhood yups can learn rollerblading or play shuffleboard when they take time out from working in their yards is indeed preferable!

I say, don't stop here! Remove the pay phones and alter the street corners, too. Everyone knows it's an undesirable element that congregates in those places. And to those of you who might suggest these steps border on racist, I'm sure the civic league, like Nancy, would just say no.

June 27, 1996 It appears SPCA is not dog's best friend

I went to the Humane Society on Frederick Boulevard to adopt a puppy for my 8-year-old daughter. I was told we could not adopt because my husband had previously returned a dog to the pound. I told them that my husband and I are separated, but that didn't matter. . .

I explained that they could contact my vet, who I'm sure could vouch for the well-being of any animals that have been under my care. . .

Any SPCA that denies a dog a good home isn't thinking of the dog's best interest. Dog is man's best friend, but it's clear to me that the Portsmouth Humane Society is not dog's best friend.
