Jesse L. Burgess, 85, a resident of the Piedmont Center, Thomasville, and Kill Devil Hills, died Saturday morning, July 13, 1996, of cancer.
Jesse was born in Conway, N.C., graduated from Wake Forest College in 1932 and was a buyer in the grocery business until 1972. During World War II, he was commissioned into the Navy from 1943-1948. He retired from the Navy Reserve as a commander, Supply Corps.
The Burgess family resided in Norfolk for 34 years and were members of Talbot Park Baptist Church. Retirement moved them to Kill Devil Hills for 22 years, with membership presently at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. For 22 years Jesse was known as an avid fisherman on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
He is survived by Hannah Clinard Burgess, his beloved wife of 58 years. Also surviving are his son, Dave Burgess of Thomasville; two daughters, Beverly McBride of Vienna, Va., and Jan Wilson of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Andy McBride, Jessica Brooks Teague and Michelle McBride Cross; five sisters and two brothers, Nellie DeLoatch, Ruby Barrett, Mamie Bridgers, Ella Mae Bartsch, E.J. Burgess, Randolph Burgess and Mona Wright; nine nephews and five nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Kitty Hawk Methodist Church, P.O. Box 900, Kitty Hawk, N.C. 27949, or the Piedmont Center Retirement Home, 100 Hedrick Drive, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.
