Vernon L. Cooke, 53, of the 2200 block of North St., died Saturday, July 13, 1996, in Portsmouth.
A native of Suffolk, he was retired from the Norfolk Naval Base as a PWC supervisor and had also worked for W.T. Stowe Inc. as a brickmason. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Tidal Wave Masonic Lodge (NU)273 and Boe Hunt Club in Southampton County.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Basham Cooke; two sons, Vernon Owen Cooke of Portsmouth and Jeffrey L. Cooke of Moyock, N.C.; a sister, Alice M. Jacobs of Portsmouth; four brothers, W.C. Cooke of Chesapeake, Donnie R. Cooke of Salem, Va., Bruce E. Cooke and Michael A. Cooke, both of Portsmouth; and a grandchild, Corey A. Cooke.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Philip J. Parker. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
