In a tight vote Monday, the School Board elected Barbara Head and Roderic Taylor as its chairman and vice chairman for the next school year.
Head, 45, kept her seat in a 5-4 vote over board member James Wheaton and Taylor, 64, edged nominee James Reeves in a 5-4 decision.
Head and Taylor have been in their respective roles since May, when then-chairman Maury Brickhouse resigned from his seat before the end of his term on June 30.
Head, a budget analyst at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, was appointed to the board in August 1992 and was elected vice chair in March 1995.
Taylor, chairman of the Fine Arts Department at Norfolk State University, was appointed to the board in April of 1995.
The chairman and vice chairman have a one-year term.
Monday's meeting was Chesapeake's first with a completely elected School Board. After a 1993 referendum to switch from appointed to elected school boards, the city held its first at-large election last December and filled five seats.
The four remaining members were elected this past May.
Board members elected last December - Thomas Bray, Taylor, Head, Reeves and Jeffrey Rowland - have two-year terms.
Wheaton, who has been on the board since 1991, and newer board members Allen Goode Jr., Patricia Willis and Thomas Mercer will be up for re-election in four years.
