PIER FISHING WAS OFF TO GOOD START BUT SLOWED LATER IN DAY

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fairly good at some locations Tuesday morning but was slow later in the day.

A few tailor bluefish and triggerfish were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier. Most of the triggerfish were snagged.

Avalon Pier reported spot, sea mullet and a few gray trout taken.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught lots of spot, small croaker and a few mullet during the morning.

Croaker also were plentiful at Jennette's Pier, with anglers catching as many as they wanted on a variety of bait.

Croaker fishing was good early in the day on Outer Banks Pier. Some spot and small bluefish were landed later.

On Hatteras Island, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught some Spanish mackerel and bluefish just after sunrise. Spot and croaker were landed sporadically during the remainder of the day.

Anglers on Avon Pier landed plenty of spot, croaker, pigfish and small gray trout. A few blues and nice sea mullet also were taken. The water in the area was dirty.

Sea mullet, small gray trout and a few pompano were taken from Frisco Pier Tuesday.

Surfcasters fishing deeper sloughs along the northern beaches landed small bottom fish, a few tailor blues and several pompano.

Spot, croaker and a few nice pompano were beached by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Some Spanish mackerel were landed at Cape Point on Monday just before dark. Mullet, croaker and pompano were taken Tuesday.

Small bluefish and a few sea mullet were caught in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. Grassy conditions kept action to a minimum.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was fairly good, with tailor blues and a few Spanish mackerel taken. Some croaker and other small bottom fish were landed by headboats in the area.

Offshore charters of Oregon Inlet caught scattered tuna and dolphin northeast of the inlet. A few billfish were released.

Blue-water action off Hatteras was fair overall. A few good dolphin catches were reported. Charters averaged three to six yellowfin tuna per boat. Sailfish were released by the Big Eye and the Chaser. Several blue marlin were lost.

The water temperature was 64.5 degrees Tuesday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 79 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
