MARINERS LOSE 2-1 ON RICHMOND'S LATE SCORE

Jon Hall scored on a header off a cross from Ruben Espinoza with 17 minutes remaining as the Richmond Kickers edged the Hampton Roads Mariners 2-1 in an exhibition soccer match at University of Richmond Saturday.

The match was the second exhibition in as many nights, necessitated by the folding of the Birmingham Grasshoppers, who were scheduled to play the Mariners Friday and the Kickers Saturday. Hampton Roads won Friday 4-1.

Sterling Wescott staked the Mariners to a 1-0 lead by scoring off a rebound in the first half.

But Richmond, which outshot the Mariners 21-18, tied it as Rob Ukrop scored off an assist from Espinoza at the 62-minute mark.

``Richmond made a good comeback in the second half,'' said Hampton Roads coach Shawn McDonald. ``We played an outstanding first half, but we have to learn how to finish.''

The Mariners host the Kickers in a Select level regular-season match Wednesday at First Colonial.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Lisa Echea and Crystal Harper each scored unassisted in the second half as Hampton Roads Piranhas defeated the Philadelphia Frenzy 2-0 in a women's soccer match at Cox High School Saturday.

Echea tallied from 20-yards out with 23 minutes to go to put the Piranhas up 1-0. Harper then took a pass from 30 yards and moved to within five yards before finessing the keeper for a 2-0 cushion seven minutes later.

Keeper Holly Patterson made eight saves, three on one-on-one breakaways, in the second half to seal the victory.
