SUFFOLK MAN DIES

A 58-year-old Suffolk man died after apparently being overcome by engine fumes while boating on the Patuxent River on Saturday, a spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources said.

James Emmett Wise was on his 38-foot power boat with his wife, Patricia, and three other people, when they had engine problems at about noon near where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay.

Wise went into the boat's hold to check out the problem. The other people on the boat found him unconscious a short time later and called Natural Resources Police, said spokesman Bob Graham.

By the time police arrived, all of the boat's occupants were complaining of lightheadedness, said Graham, who added that Wise may have been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from the engine.

Wise was taken to Patuxent Naval Air Station Hospital in Leonardtown, where he was pronounced dead at 1:56 p.m., Graham said. The other occupants were treated at hospitals and released.
