Gordon ``Ray'' Brooks, 67, of the 200 block of South Plaza Trail, died with dignity at his home, Aug. 1, 1996, and in doing so taught us life's final lesson. He will now reside in Heaven.
A native of Corbin, Ky., he was a retired master chief avionics technician with 30 years service in the U.S. Navy.
He was a man who loved working in his yard and garden and a loyal friend to many. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah L. and Richard W. Setzer Jr.; a son, Donald L. Brooks; a daughter, Linda D. McKinney; four dearly loved grandchildren, Shawn W. and Shannon L. Setzer and Cody Ray and Nicole McKinney; and a very dear friend and companion, Anna M. Apperson, all of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Ruby and Gil Treadway of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Doris Wilson of Pine Knot, Ky.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Sharon Brooks of Marrow, Ga., Jerry and Barbara Brooks of Pensacola, Fla.; his stepmother, Lela Brooks and two stepbrothers, Philip and Danny Norvell of Corbin, Ky.; and many loving friends and neighbors.
A graveside service will full military honors will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dick Pope officiating. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Always willing to help others in any way he could, it is requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. He will be sorely missed by all whose life he touched.
