ART LOVERS, CELEBRATE ``FIRST SUNDAY IN PORTSMOUTH''

ON SUNDAY, galleries in downtown Portsmouth will be open, many of them offering receptions honoring their new exhibits.

``First Sunday in Portsmouth'' starts at Potrafka Gallery, 600 Washington St., with a reception from 1 to 5 p.m. for a show featuring John Thomas, a realistic still life painter who lives in Chesapeake.

Also exhibiting at Potrafka in August is the Eastern Shore Art League. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. A concert tonight at 7 features Baroque and Renaissance music. Call 399-4774.

Nearby, at 629 High St., Art Atrium is showcasing wood sculptures by Robert Floyd, gallery manager.

Typically closed on Sundays, Art Atrium will be open today from 2 to 5 p.m. Floyd's show will continue through Aug. 10. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. 393-1215.

Three blocks away, a reception is set for 2 to 5 p.m. at Olde Towne Gallery, 341 High St. Williamsburg watercolorist Thomas Coll's Olde Towne debut will feature paintings of ships. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. weekends. Call 397-2787.

Also open on Sunday afternoons are The Arts Center of the Portsmouth Museums, as well as Tidewater Community College's Visual Arts Center, both at the corner of High and Court streets.

Through Aug. 18, the Arts Center is showcasing work by 10 Latin American painters and sculptors. Admission is $1. Call 393-8543.

A week ago, TCC opened a show of paintings by Federico Correa, lithographs by Ed Zingraff and ceramics by Kimberly Payne, which continues through Sept. 6. Free. Call 396-6999. by CNB
