GUNFIRE KILLS MAN OUTSIDE BEACH NIGHTCLUB

A 31-year-old Virginia Beach man was shot to death early Saturday morning as he was leaving a nightclub in the southeast section of the city.

Christopher Lanier Ward of the 2100 block of Mary Mount Arch in Virginia Beach was at the Dew Drop Inn, 1446 25th St., when an argument broke out at about 1 a.m., Newport News police spokeswoman Patty Schlosser said.

Ward, along with the other customers, left the nightclub. Police do not believe Ward was involved in the argument. He was walking toward his car when shots were fired and a bullet struck him in the head, Schlosser said.

Police and medics arrived on the scene shortly after the shots were fired.

Ward was taken to Hampton General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:02 a.m.

Ward turned 31 on Friday.

Police are investigating, but have not charged anyone in the shooting, Schlosser said.
