Thank you for recognizing the financial feat the Virginia Beach school system has accomplished for the 1995-1996 fiscal year.
As a citizen and a newly elected School Board member, I wish to express my gratitude for the hard work, determination and sacrifices that were made this past year by all those in the system.
We must remember that the '95-'96 budget was prepared by the same people who prepared the disastrous '94-'95 budget. In September 1995, interim Superintendent James L. Pughsley committed to making the necessary cuts so that we would not come out in the red this year.
As Superintendent Timothy Jenney said, ``It's been a long, trying year. This is a very positive sign for the year to come.''
I know the new School Board, as well as the 9,000 employees in the system, will continue to be financially responsible to the citizens of Virginia Beach and committed to excellence in education.
