A 7-year-old Pennsylvania boy was in critical condition in a Norfolk hospital Monday night after a car hit his bike.
Kevin Simmins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Simmins of Broomall, Pa., was hit at 9:33 p.m. Sunday while crossing Old Oregon Inlet Road in South Nags Head. He suffered numerous injuries to his head and body.
The boy was treated at the scene by workers from the Nags Head Fire Department and Dare County Emergency Medical Services, then transferred by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General. Later he was moved to the intensive care unit at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk.
The 1990 Geo Tracker that hit Simmins was driven by Kristopher T. Tatemichi, 18, of Ontario, Canada. Tatemichi was not injured.
Nags Head Police Chief Charles Cameron said the accident was under investigation by Officers Andrew Riedell and Allen Hurdle. Cameron said neither alcohol nor excessive speed was a factor.
