A young woman killed in a wreck during the weekend has been identified as Heather L. Thornton, 19, of the 8700 block of Adams Drive.
Thornton was riding in the car that struck a pickup truck on Kings Fork Road, police said.
The accident happened about 9 p.m. Saturday just east of Waters Road, about one-fourth of a mile from U.S. Route 10, or Godwin Boulevard.
Thornton was riding in her parents' 1992 Honda with a 17-year-old Portsmouth boy, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said. They were headed east when he lost control and spun into the westbound lane. The car struck the side of a pickup that had pulled onto the shoulder to try to avoid a collision, Simpkins said.
The teenage boy and the driver of the pickup, Henry C. Mizelle, 42, of the 900 block of Kings Fork Road, had minor injuries. Mizelle's wife, Barbara T. Mizelle, 46, was taken to Obici Hospital where she was in the intensive care unit Monday.
Speed was a factor in the accident, Simpkins said. No one involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt, but both drivers' air bags helped prevent more serious injuries, he said.
