A man found dead in a kayak off Sandbridge beach Monday killed himself, a medical examiner concluded Tuesday.
A Coast Guard crew found the 38-year-old man still seated in the overturned kayak after someone spotted and reported the capsized boat at dusk Monday. When the crew saw the man had been shot in the head, police were called.
Police identified the man as James E. Segal of the 2100 block of Woodlawn Ave.
An autopsy showed the wound was self-inflicted, police said. Typically, a self-inflicted wound leaves a telltale pattern of gunpowder residue, burns and soot, as well as residue on the hand that fired the gun.
