VIRGINIA BEACH - Melvin Ira Harris, 38, of 801 Springs Court, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital.
He was a native of Norfolk, had lived in Virginia Beach most of his life, and was a son of Kenneth R. and Ruby Travis Harris. He was a food service dietician with First Hospital Corporation in Norfolk from 1988 until 1993.
In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by a sister, Cheryl L. Bitterling of Newport News; three brothers, Kenny R. Harris, Gary A. Harris and Edward R. Harris, all of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Ashley Robley of Hooper, Neb.; a son, Nicholas Robley of Hooper; paternal grandmother, Mabel Harris of Virginia Beach; his best friend, Russell Grimm of Newport News; five nephews and a niece.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. in the Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Avenue Chapel, by the Rev. Joseph E. Brewer, and Sister Mary Joan Kentz. Burial will follow in Willowood Cemetery, Sandbridge Road. The family will receive friends in the funeral home today from 7 until 8 p.m. and at other times at his parents' residence, 1477 London Bridge Road, Virginia Beach, 23456. Memorial donations may be made to the Transformation Retreats, c/o Ruth Fitzsimmons, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 823 Park Ave., Richmond, Va. 23320, or the Candii House, 3309 Granby St., Norfolk, 23508.
