Lt. Cmdr. Michael Traviss DeWitt, (retired), 61, of Virginia Beach, died Aug. 6, 1996, in his residence.
A native of Harbor Springs, Mich., he served 22 years in the U.S. Navy. He piloted the A-4 during his naval career and earned 13 air medals during combat in Vietnam. His last operational tours were in the combat theatre as weapons loading officer and squadron pilot on attack carrier CVAN-65. After retiring from the Navy, Mr. DeWitt acquired a master's degree in Urban Studies from Old Dominion University. Upon joining QED Systems in 1979, Mr. DeWitt was assigned as a logistics management specialist to the support equipment rework program. He served as a volunteer at Boone Clinic and was employed by Eastern Virginia Medical School at the time of his death. He was the son of the late M. Noble and Zylphia DeWitt.
Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Conti and her husband of Virginia Beach; two sons, Lt. Steven M. DeWitt (U.S.N.) and his wife of Kings Bay, Ga., Lt. Michael T. Dewitt II (U.S.N.) and his wife of Plymouth, Mass.; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Burt of Grand Rapids, Mich., and his former wife, Bernice M. DeWitt of Virginia Beach.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at NAS Oceana Chapel of the Good Shepherd by Chaplain Wilkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Virginia Medical School.
