James B. Hess, 68, of the 900 block of Mildred St., died Aug. 6, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.
He was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy and retired after 23 years of service. He also retired from the U.S. Post Office after 20 years of service. Born in Uniontown, Pa., he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Moose Lodge. He was an avid supporter of the Old Dominion Big Blue.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy J. Hess; daughter, Debra L. Joyce and her husband, Sam, of Norfolk; son, Jacob W. Hess and his wife, Heidi, of Baltimore, Md.; mother, Thelma Kennedy; five grandchildren, Jayme Holcombe, Shelby Joyce, Stephanie Hess, Jacob Hess and Hannah Hess.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by Pastor Daniel Quiram. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today and Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
