ANOTHER SLOW DAY FOR PIER FISHING ON OUTER BANKS

Pier fishing was slow again Wednesday at most locations along the Dare Coast.

Kitty Hawk Pier anglers caught a few nice pompano, several black drum, a few small spot and small bluefish. Some cobia and barracuda were seen, but not caught.

Small bluefish were caught during the morning on Avalon Pier. A few cobia were seen, but none were hooked. Afternoon fishing was slow.

A few bluefish and flounder were landed by Nags Head Pier fishermen early in the morning. Few fish were taken out of the clear water around the pier during the remainder of the day.

Little action was reported from Jennette's Pier during the morning, but spot fishing was good in the afternoon.

A few snapper blues, spot and small croaker were landed on Outer Banks Pier. A few big fish were seen, but none could be tempted into taking a bait.

South of Oregon Inlet, a few spot, bluefish and flounder were caught from Rodanthe Pier off and on Wednesday. A 19-pound king mackerel was decked by Tom Wiley of Rodanthe and a 27 1/2-pound cobia was landed by an unidentified angler.

A good run of bluefish and Spanish mackerel developed on Avon pier just after sunrise. Fishing was slow later in the day.

A few scattered pompano and several nice sea mullet were landed from Frisco Pier during the morning, but action was unusually slow most of the day.

Surf fishing for small bottom fish was good from Corolla to Oregon Inlet Wednesday.

Some nice sea mullet were landed along the north shore of Oregon Inlet. Anglers fishing from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge caught mixed bottom fish, as did fishermen on the revetment.

Action was slow along the beach in the Rodanthe-Salvo area. Some nice sea mullet were hauled from the surf around Ramps 34 and 38.

Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed steadily at Cape Point for about an hour just after dawn. Small pompano, flounder and several puppy drum were taken during the day.

Fishing was slow along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling was good around Oregon Inlet, with plenty of tailor bluefish taken, along with a few Spanish mackerel.

Headboats around the inlet caught plenty of croaker, bluefish and pigfish. Some nice catches of flounder were reported by boaters drift fishing.

Croaker continued to be plentiful near the Manns Harbor bridge. Some good catches of flounder also have been reported from the same area.

Blue water action was slow off Oregon Inlet Wednesday. A few tuna were taken and several billfish were released, including a blue marlin by the Obsession. Dolphin fishing was poor.

Hatteras offshore charters also reported slow fishing, with a few dolphin, tuna and wahoo taken. The Eagle released two blue marlin, the Top Billing released a white marlin and a sailfish, and the Tom Cat released a sailfish.

The water temperature was 75.5 degrees Wednesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 77 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
