An 8-year-old Madison, Wis., boy has been injured trying to cross N.C. 12 near Avon.
James Corkey Custer was standing with a group of pedestrians on the southbound shoulder of the road when he ran into the path of an oncoming vehicle about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
A truck, driven by Arvon Glonek of Hatteras, swerved into the northbound lane to avoid the youngster. Custer ran into the right door of Glonek's 1988 Ford pickup truck.
North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Craig Garriss said Glonek was driving at a normal rate of speed, and no charges were filed.
Custer was transported by helicopter to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk. He is listed in fair condition.
Meanwhile, a 7-year-old Pennsylvania boy remains in critical condition following a similar accident Sunday night in Nags Head.
Kevin Simmins of Broomall, a suburb of Philadelphia, was struck about 9:30 p.m. as he tried to cross Old Oregon Inlet Road.
