BUSINESS BRIEFS

STORE CLOSES: Churchland Marketplace has closed for good.

Michael Julian, one of the partners in Marketplace Acquisitions Corp., said the reason was ``simple.''

``The store didn't make any money,'' he said.

Julian, also president and CEO of Farm Fresh, said the store was one of those ``left over from the sale'' of Gene Walters Marketplace to Farm Fresh. Marketplace Acquisitions was an independent group, he said.

``We couldn't keep losing money,'' Julian said. ``So we made a deal with the landlord on the lease.''

Owners of the property could not be reached this week, but the word is that an automobile parts store is looking at the space.

TEACHING AIDS: Janet's Office Supply and Machines Inc. has added a new section called The Teacher's Shop.

Theresa Garris, a vice president of Janet's, said the section will stock a variety of items school teachers always need, including workbooks, felt story boards, bulletin boards, educational puzzles and toys, posters, border papers, plan books and certificates.

``We will take special orders from teachers and also may enlarge the section to carry items they request,'' Garris said.

The new section is open now and the company will have an official grand opening Aug. 24.

Janet's is located at 2215 High St. It is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

For more information, call 397-2301.

SOUND SEMINAR: A seminar on sound systems for houses of worship will be held Sept. 28 at Willett Hall.

The seminar will be sponsored by Ambassador Enterprises Inc., the Portsmouth-based company that specializes in sound and video systems.

For more information, call Bill Ricketts at 393-2005.

CERAMICS: Ceramics and More, a family business at 315 Green St., sells both supplies and finished pieces.

The business is owned by Robert and Cheryl Wright.

Located behind Fort Nelson Towers, the shop is open from 4 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The store is closed Tuesdays and Sundays. by CNB
