A lifeguard patrolling the beach in South Nags Head on Friday saved the life of a drowning visitor from Herndon, Va.
Doug Cupp, a lifeguard with the Nags Head Ocean Rescue, was on a routine patrol at about 10:30 a.m. near Junco Street when he saw a woman floating face- down about 50 yards offshore.
Cupp swam out and brought 30-year-old Wunng Ahn, who did not have a pulse and was not breathing, back to shore, Ocean Rescue Director Bill Ryan said.
Cupp and a bystander started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and within a few minutes, the victim had started to breathe on her own.
Dare County EMS and Nags Head firefighters responded to the call and continued emergency medical procedures.
Ahn was transported from the scene by Dare Med Flight to Chesapeake General Hospital, where officials said she had been moved to the intensive care unit about 5 p.m. by CNB
