Virginia Tardy Getzinger died Saturday Aug. 10, 1996, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital.
Mrs. Getzinger was active in radio and the early days of television on the Peninsula. She worked closely with the late Thomas Chisman in establishing WVEC Channel 13. Later she worked for four years for the N.W. Ayer Advertising Agency of New York and Philadelphia buying radio and television commercial time. Before returning to the Peninsula, she worked for a time in the Washington office of Congressman Thomas Downing. Over the years she performed volunteer work at many agencies in Hampton, Newport News, and Fort Monroe.
Mrs. Getzinger was a member of the Episcopal Congregation of the Chapel of the Centurian at Fort Monroe. She was also a member of the First Families of Virginia, Hereditary Order of Descendants of Colonial Governors, The Virginia Historical Society and Army Daughters.
She is survived by her husband, Col. Philip Getzinger, U.S. Army retired; her daughter, Margaret ``Maggie'' Douglas of Virginia Beach; and her granddaughter, Dorothy Anne Douglas.
A graveside service and burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Thursday Aug. 15, 1996, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of the Centurion, Ft. Monroe. Expressions of sympathy may be in the form of contributions to the Jackson-Feild Home For Girls, Jarratt, Va. 28867.
