Radio station WVOD (99.l-FM) has caught Babe Ruth Baseball fever.
Tonight, the Manteo radio station's ``Babe Ruth Baseball Music Blowout'' at the Atlantis nightclub offers some big league musicians. National recording artists Fleming and John lead the card that includes three Outer Banks bands.
Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Babe Ruth World Series.
Here's the starting lineup of the playoff at the Atlantis, in order of appearance.
Leading off and playing at 6 p.m. is the harmonica heavy Hook. Powered by Hohner harp virtuoso and singer Chip Sellarole, the five-month-old Outer Banks band is already approaching legendary status for its Monday night jams in Kitty Hawk's Rundown Cafe.
Drummer Dan Martier and bassist Steve Aldi are the rock solid rhythm section. Guitarist Joe Mapp rounds out the jump blues/funk outfit. What can you expect from Sellarole and the boys?
``I play Jimi Hendrix's `Voodoo Chile' on the harp,'' Sellarole says. ``That sort of freaks people out.''
The Outer Banks trio known as Kinda Blue took its name from the Miles Davis album, ``Kind Of Blue.''
``It was always my favorite album by him,'' says the band's lead guitarist and singer Dale Cates. ``He was cool.''
Cates, drummer Scott Lawrence and bassist Tom Stevenson play blues rock that favors Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Muddy Waters.
``I like their music because they play from the heart,'' Cates says.
Big-voiced Carolyn Hatch heads Hooker's Night Out, the namesake of lead guitarist Monte Hooker. The 2-year-old band also includes bassist Tom Stevenson (a double play for him) and drummer Bob Makar.
Fleming McWilliams and John Mark Painter are Fleming and John. The married couple's debut album, ``Delusions of Grandeur,'' is receiving heavy airplay on modern music stations nationwide.
Although the album was recorded by a four-person band, Fleming and John will be the only two on stage.
``It's going to be an unplugged thing,'' says WVOD program director Johnny Crook. ``They're driving out from their home in Nashville for this. I've known them since I worked in 96X in Norfolk. They're really nice people.''
WVOD also plans to silently auction some rock 'n' roll stuff, including an official Louisville Slugger autographed by Hootie and The Blowfish. Also up for bid are Lenny Kravitz and Chris Isaak autographed posters, as well as Jimmy Buffett and Elvis Presley CD box sets. MEMO: MUSIC BLOWOUT
