Arthur W. ``Art'' Vogeley passed away Aug. 12, 1996, in his home in Marlbank Farm.
He began his distinguished career at NASA in 1939 after graduation from MIT in aeronautical engineering. When he retired from NASA in 1974 he was head of guidance and control branch. Mr. Vogeley was an expert in simulation for manned flight in Aeronautics and Space. He was a member of the committee that established the Lunar Orbital Rendezvous Technique for putting a man on the moon. He was the inventor of the Space Rendezvous and Docking Simulator used for research and training of the astronauts for the Apollo and Gemini manned space programs. This simulator is now a historical scientific monument at Langley Research Center. As Langley's foremost simulation expert he said in 1966 ``Simulation is now big business . . . where it will go in the next 15 years is anybody's guess.''
Mr. Vogeley began his career conducting propeller research for quiet propellers and extended this to the area of supersonic flight. A propeller of Mr. Vogeley's design has been on display at the Smithsonian. In the early 50s he was Langley's project engineer, responsible for operations and coordination for the X-15, a high altitude rocket powered supersonic research aircraft. In the early 70s he was the driving force behind NASA's development of oculometry, the science of computer automated eye tracking. Oculometry was used in pilot visual scanning measurements and is also used to provide computer access to the handicapped. Mr. Vogeley won numerous awards and published and presented many technical articles during his 35-year career at NACA/NASA.
After retirement from NASA, Mr. Vogeley co-founded nVIEW Corporation, the Peninsula-based manufacturer of computer display products, and played a key role in its growth.
A long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown, Mr. Vogeley served on the vestry, as junior warden, and as a lay reader. He was also a lifetime member of Boy Scout Troop 201 in recognition of his years of service.
Mr. Vogeley is survived by his wife, Julia, children, Bill, Susan and Jim; and four grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown. The family will receive friends in the church Parish House following the service. The family requests that contributions be made to the Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or The American Cancer Society. Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, is in charge of arrangements.
