GOOD NEWS FOR FOLKS WHO WANT THEIR MAYPO

HE'D STAND in the store yelling, ``I want my Maypo.''

I'd scurry down the aisle and turn the corner pretending I didn't know the man. Maypo became one of many reasons to avoid grocery shopping with my husband. He has these attachments to foods from his childhood and Maypo was one of the strongest.

Maypo, he said, was maple-flavored oatmeal.

``We have maple-flavored oatmeal in the South, dear,'' I'd argue. ``Why don't you just buy Quaker's?''

``It's not the same.''

Then he'd pout.

``I want my Maypo,'' he'd say, copying a cartoon-character spokesperson for the cereal.

One morning, on a recent cruise in Maine, the ship's cook served Maypo.

``Maypo!'' You'd have thought it was Christmas.

And he was right. Other maple-flavored oatmeals aren't the same.

They're too sweet. Too gritty.

Maypo is smooth and silky with a delicate maple flavor. It contains only 3 grams of sugar per 1/2-cup serving compared to 13 grams in a serving of Quaker Instant Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal. Also, Maypo doesn't contain sodium; Quaker's version does.

We bought three boxes on the way home from New England.

But you don't have to travel north to get Maypo. Hannaford, the Maine-based grocery chain, stocks Maypo in its Norfolk and Virginia Beach stores. A 14-ounce box costs about $2.19.

Now when he wants his Maypo, he can have it. Maybe we'll start shopping together again.
