I am writing to correct information contained in ``Backpacking in the sand'' (Daily Break, July 21). I am pleased that travel correspondent Mary Burnham enjoyed her trip to Assateague Island National Seashore. There is, however, misleading information in her article that should be corrected to avoid misunderstandings by future backcountry campers.
Backcountry sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations are accepted. Permits for Little Levels, Tingles Island, Pine Tree and Jim's Gut must be obtained by 5 p.m. (3 p.m. during standard time). Permits to State Line and Pope Bay are not issued after 12 p.m. due to the length of the trip to access these sites.
There are specific areas at each site in which to camp. At bayside sites, you must camp within 50 feet of the various fire rings. At oceanside sites, camping is within the designated boundary behind the primary dune. No camping is allowed on the beach or the dunes. This is clearly stated in the regulations. Unfortunately, the picture that accompanied your article shows the writer illegally camped!
The staff at Assateague Island National Seashore will be happy to answer any questions about backcountry camping. Call (410) 641-3030 for information or a brochure. Or write: Assateague Island National Seashore, 7206 National Seashore Lane, Berlin, Md. 21811.
